How Much MoviePass New Movie With The Orchard Made At The Weekend Box Office

MoviePass is still experimenting with how to make its business model work. In addition to figuring out how much the service can charge per month without losing money, MoviePass and its parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics are working on alternative revenue streams. One of those streams involves acquiring movies and putting them out into the world, and this weekend saw MoviePass' first attempt hit theaters. The movie American Animals was acquired by MoviePass along with The Orchard, and it did big in-theater numbers this weekend, raking in $35,000 per theater it was released in.

Smaller indie movies are never going to be able to compete with big box office tentpoles, and often those movies even hit way fewer theaters instead of getting a huge wide release. In the case of American Animals, the flick was only recently into four theaters over the weekend. There, it made $140, 629 in theaters, or roughly $35,000 per theater. That's not the highest per theater opening for an indie flick this year. So far, Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs has already done better, pulling in around $60,000 per theater during its opening foray into theaters. A few other movies have done higher per theater numbers, as well. Still, the numbers are a win for American Animals.

American Animals won't release wide for a few more weeks, as reports indicate it will hit 600 theaters domestically on June 22. So far, the heist movie, which stars Evan Peters, Ann Dowd and others, has scored well on Rotten Tomatoes, running at 84% at the time of this writing. We'll keep you updated as more audiences are able to see the movie.

This movie is an interesting one, as both The Orchard and MoviePass put in money to nab the rights to American Animals, which cost $3 million to acquire. MoviePass has the platform to theoretically pump up the movie in front of engaged movegoers and had plans to do so. The movie has featured heavily on the app, and MoviePass even offered perks to users who saw the movie in theaters over the weekend, per Deadline. MoviePass has talked in recent months about offering other streams of revenue, and cross-promoting movies on its platform seems to be one of those ideas. Helios and Matheson Analytics also has the exclusive option to purchase Emmett Furla Oasis Films, which means the company is looking to make its own movie projects. It's an interesting strategy, to say the least.

In addition to outside streams of revenue, MoviePass has been making some changes to the actual pass in recent months, in the hopes that eventually the service will find the sweet spot between making a profit and keeping its customers happy. There's Fan Art Of Rocket After Avengers: Infinity War, And It Is Devastating

Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War are ahead!

After two movies worth of shenanigans on their own, the Guardians of the Galaxy finally interacted with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier this year during Avengers: Infinity War. In Rocket Raccoon and Groot's case, they spent most of their time with Thor, though towards the end of the movie, the trio finally made it to Earth. Unfortunately, thanks to Thanos' snap of destruction, half of life in the universe was wiped out, and the only Guardians who made it out of Infinity War intact were Rocket and Nebula. In Rocket's case, he watched with horror as Groot disappeared before his eyes, and a new piece of fan art depicts everyone's favorite trash panda desperately trying to bring his friend back.

Ever since we saw the two of them staking out bounty targets on Xandar, it's been clear that Rocket and Groot shared a close bond. Sure, Groot may have publicly been known as Rocket's "muscle," but make no mistake, those two cared deeply about each other. And Rocket had already watched the original Groot sacrifice himself in Guardians of the Galaxy, so for him to see Groot Jr. fade away in Avengers: Infinity War was equally as heartbreaking... actually, arguably more so considering what the adolescent tree's final word was. As you can see in the above illustration from BossLogic, Rocket is putting Groot's ashes into a plant pot and trying to grow his fallen friend back, just like he did at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, I fear it's not going to work this time around, and that makes this artwork all the more devastating.

Although Avengers 4 is less than a year away, Marvel Studios is keeping tight-lipped on plot details concerning the superhero blockbuster. With the exception of Spider-Man, who has his sequel movie coming out two months after Avengers 4, we don't even know for sure yet if all of the characters who were erased by the power of the six Infinity Stones. That said, one could certainly make educated guesses as to who will return, and I'd like to think that before Avengers 4 is over, Rocket and Groot will be reunited. For now, though, expect Rocket to be without the walking and talking tree by his side when Avengers 4 begins, and knowing Rocket's temperamental personality, I suspect that when we meet back up with him, he's been getting into a lot of trouble to cope with the pain of losing his family, Groot especially.

Avengers 4 opens in theaters on May 3, 2019, and while we don't specifically what's in store for the Guardians of the Galaxy in the final Phase Three installment, there will at least be enough of them around by the end of the movie for a third standalone, cinematic adventure, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated for release sometime in 2020. Chris Hemsworth Wants Us To Know He Had A Comedy Background Before Thor: Ragnarok

If you were to watch all of the Thor films in order for the first time, you would notice a fairly stark tonal shift in Thor: Ragnarok. The God of Thunder finally found his footing in the third film, with a comedic cosmic romp that was far more fun-filled and humorous than the first two entries. For many, it was a revelation that Chris Hemsworth was hilarious and needed to be put in more comedies stat. However the actor would have us know that he didn't just come into Ragnarok cold and excel at improvisational comedy. His previous experience gave him the tools and experience necessary to work in the improvisational comedic environment under director Taika Waititi. As he explained:

From Thor 3, definitely, it became hugely improvised. And I'm so glad I've been able to work with Paul prior to that. And I've done Saturday Night Live a couple of times; I have a movie called Vacation. So by the time I got to Thor 3, I was incredibly enthusiastic to do it. Taika Waititi, the director, had the same opinion. And we carried that into Avengers.

Chris Hemsworth's Thor: Ragnarok performance did not exist in a vacuum, as he was able to cut his teeth on other comedic roles prior to bringing that freewheeling comedy style to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On Ghostbusters, Chris Hemsworth worked with comedy director Paul Feig, which was one of the first times where the actor's comedy talents were on display and noticed. He has also done the trial by fire job of hosting Saturday Night Live, which often requires improvisational skills. Even the critically panned Vacation was a learning experience. So while the actor has some natural comedy chops, he had a solid foundation before the success of Thor: Rangarok where Taika Waititi truly unleashed the actor's humor.

As Chris Hemsworth told Esquire, they were able to carry this new, more comedic Thor into Avengers: Infinity War. This is remarkable because Thor's story is a tragic one, yet his hilarious banter with the Guardians of the Galaxy and especially Rocket Raccoon provides some of the funniest moments. You can really tell that Chris Hemsworth has enjoyed this new direction for his character, and it's pretty obvious that lots of other people do to given Ragnarok's box office performance and critical reception. I can't imagine that Thor will have too much to joke about in Avengers 4, but hopefully he will survive that film and get to continue down this fun new trajectory in Phase 4 now that he has finally found his groove.

It seems now that the word is truly out that in addition to being a superhero, Chris Hemsworth is a comedy star in the making. The actor will be reuniting with Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson for the reboot of Men In Black that is scheduled to hit theaters next year. If anyone is going to capture the combination of action star and hilarious lead that Will Smith did in the original Men in Black, Chris Hemsworth has the skills to do it and will hopefully make that franchise relevant again.

Why Morbius Probably Won't Be Sony's Next Venom

The first of Sony's Spider-Man spin-off movies, Venom, was released last fall. Against several critics expectations -- mine included -- Venom ended up being a huge success for the studio. The movie made $855.8 million at the worldwide box office, seemingly proving that there was steam to Sony's superhero movies. The next film in the series is Morbius, but while Sony likely feels emboldened by Venom's home run, Morbius is probably unlikely to follow in Venom's footsteps for the studio because it lacks what made Venom successful: notoriety.

For starters, nobody knows who the hell Morbius is, whereas even average moviegoers were at least a little familiar with Venom.

For those who may not know, Morbius, the Living Vampire is a Spider-Man villain/anti-hero. Michael Morbius was a brilliant scientist who accidentally turned himself into a vampire-like creature after trying to cure his blood disease. He often tries to find a cure for his condition while battling the insatiable hunger for human blood.

In many ways, Morbius is like Venom. Both started out as villains and then became brooding anti-heroes trying to balance their lust for violence with a desire to do good. In that way, it's easier to see why Sony chose Morbius to lead a movie and why his story was tasked with following Venom.

The problem, though, is that as far as popularity goes, the two characters aren't anywhere close to the same weight class. If Venom is the high school quarterback, then Morbius is the kid with his shirt tucked into his underwear.

While plenty of fans bemoaned the idea of a Venom movie without Spider-Man, he's still at least a logical choice to receive a film. I could argue that Venom is an uninteresting character and a bad villain for hours, but there's no denying that he has a huge fanbase. Venom found popularity in the late '80s and '90s when the most popular comics were the ones with anti-heroes, massive muscles, ammo pouches and a cool look. Characters like Deadpool, Lobo, Cable and Wolverine thrived, and Venom is definitely part of that bunch too.

That popularity has pretty much followed him ever since. Venom is one of the most well-known Spider-Man bad guys and has appeared in many different TV shows, video games, books and other media. He arguably got his biggest shot in Spider-Man 3 where he was played by Topher Grace. That didn't turn out well for anyone involved, but by 2018, even the most casual of audiences could likely look at Venom and place him as "evil Spider-Man."

Morbius does nor have that level of name recognition. He's appeared in a few different Spider-Man cartoons, but he's a character that you use after you've already gone through all the popular villains. At the end of the day, he's a C-list character.

Venom already had that fanbase built-in, which helped boost its box office. Over $800 million is nothing to scoff at, and I think the character's popularity had a big role to play in that because the movie on its own isn't that impressive. It's about as generic and uninspired a blockbuster as you can get, and it's all impressively propped up by Tom Hardy's gonzo performance.

I'm not trying to say that a movie needs have a pre-existing fanbase to be successful, but it helps! That's why studios look for existing IPs to reboot or make into films; because it's less of a risk than starting from scratch. Aquaman and Black Panther are two of the highest grossing movies of 2018, and both of the films' respective lead characters were introduced ahead of time.

The fact that I felt that I had to explain who Morbius was earlier is an indicator of how little I think people know or care about him. It's not so much that he's a bad character, but he doesn't stand with big dogs like Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus.

Of course, there could be various other factors that end up helping Morbius in the long run, but the deck is stacked against it. A lot of it depends on who the rest of the cast is and what the movie actually looks like. It could be that the first trailer really raises the hype, but we won't find those things out for a long time still.

I will say, though, that if there's any actor who can match Tom Hardy's go-for-broke performance in Venom, it's probably Jared Leto. The actor infamously went all in while playing The Joker in Suicide Squad, sending rats to his co-stars, amongst other things. The actor might be able to take this vampire and really push him to the limits.

However, even while I would say that Venom isn't a particularly interesting character, he's still better than Morbius. Venom at least has a Jekyll and Hyde thing between Eddie Brock and the symbiote that's entertaining to watch. According to the small armies worth of Venom fanart, people agree with that.

Morbius is less likely to leave as strong of an impression on fans. Morbius is a reluctant vampire, which is something that's already been done dozens of times. People have seen this type of character before, so it's up to Morbius finding a new spin on this trope that's different from all the others. It might be fun to watch a guy like Spider-Man try to deal with a vampire, but without the Wall-Crawler, what is it that makes Morbius special?

It's still too early to speak in any definitive terms whether Morbius will be Sony's next Venom. It could be that the first trailer blows people out of the water and then people get really interested in seeing this movie. At this moment in time, I would say it's an uphill battle. Morbius doesn't have quite the popularity that helped Venom become a box office juggernaut and there are other challenges the movie has to face. Venom's success completely took me by surprise, but it makes sense. Only time will tell if Morbius is able to exceed expectations to keep Sony's hot streak alive.
