Jude Law Is Still Dodging Questions About Captain Marvel Role

The next big entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels closer than ever now that we've crossed the border into 2019, but there's still a lot we don't know about Captain Marvel, including the identity of the character being played by Jude Law. When the actor was originally cast it was believed he was playing Mar-Vell, the comic character that held the Captain Marvel moniker prior to Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. However, when recently asked if he was playing Captain Marvel, the actor insisted that wasn't the case. According to Law...

No, I'm not. Brie Larson is Captain Marvel.

Of course, immediately after saying this, Jude Law makes a joke that the "Marvel Police" might shoot him for saying that. On the one hand, he might be joking about the fact that the one thing we all know, that Brie Larson is playing Captain Marvel, is the sort of thing he could get in trouble for saying. Of course, if Jude Law were playing Mar-Vell, there's an argument to be made that he is, in fact, playing Captain Marvel, meaning this question is a bit dicier than it might appear.

The question came as part of an "autocomplete interview" with Wired where Jude Law, and his Vox Lux co-star Natalie Portman, answered questions that came up as part of Google autocomplete search results. This means that a not insignificant number of people have apparently searched for the question "Is Jude Law Captain Marvel?" Certainly, while Brie Larson may be playing the title role in the film, there are still enough people who are curious as to how Jude Law's character fits into the story to ask such a question.

While Jude Law may not be Captain Marvel, it does appear that he is playing Mar-Vell. A slideshow of images recently posted to a Disney website outed Law's character as Mar-Vell at one point. The title of the image has since been changed to call Law "Leader of the Starforce," so it appears Marvel still isn't quite ready to let the cat out of the bag.

Of course, other leaks and rumors have claimed that Law is playing a different role, Yon-Rogg is one potential character that Law might actually be playing, so at this point, it seems we really won't know for sure until the movie comes out and confirms what's going on.

What does seem likely is that the simple fact that Jude Law's role is being held back is important. It probably means that knowing who Jude Law is playing would reveal something about the movie they don't want us to know. If that's the case then maybe he isn't actually playing Mar-Vell after all, as that doesn't seem like much of a spoiler, but who knows?

The horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance right now. Rather than stale sequels, there are new exciting properties being brought to theaters. These movies are being met with critical and box office acclaim, with projects like Get Out even getting Oscar attention. But the genre is also built on long-running franchises, and it looks like one of the newer classics is going to be getting a reboot: Saw. What's more, comedian Chris Rock is involved in the developing project.

While Chris Rock isn't a name usually associated with horror, he's going to intimately involved with rebooting the Saw franchise, as both an executive producer and story writer. The gore-heavy property has typically been ultra serious and cruel, Rock's point of view and comedic background should help to bring new life. Liongsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake issued a statement with the announcement of the forthcoming reboot, explaining:

When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in. Saw is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and its one of Lionsgates most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.

The Saw franchise hasn't spent much time out of theaters, but it looks like the next installment will be notably different from its predecessors. And it's arriving soon, as the untitled project is set to hit theaters in October of 2020.

This statement from Lionsgate (via Variety) should illicit a mixture of reactions. Obviously fans of the Saw franchise will be thrilled to see more horrifying traps on the silver screen. But Chris Rock might not be the first person that moviegoers associate with the genre, let alone such an infamously gory one. Then again, the Saw films have generally been formulaic, so perhaps a fresh perspective is what the property needs to remain relevant in the midst of the horror renaissance.

Chris Rock also gave a brief statement regarding his excitement for the upcoming Saw reboot, which he'll be producing and helping create the story for. He said:

Ive been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.

Twisted is right, as the Saw franchise is classified under the sub-genre "torture porn." Movieogers have watched behind their hands as countless characters are massacred in bloody ways, usually in excruciating physical pain. The sub-genre that was made famous through the Saw and Hostel franchises, although the overall horror world seems to be going in a different direction recently.

If Chris Rock is able to bring something new to the Saw franchise, it could give the property new momentum. To do this, moviegoers going to need more than just the terrifying traps, like character-driven story and some moments of levity. We'll just have to see if Rock can help make this happen.

The upcoming mega-shark thriller The Meg seems like the kind of film that will revel in its underwater chaos, dipping victim after victim into the bloody waters as Jason Statham, Ruby Rose and some action-movie heavy hitters try to stop a beast from feasting on innocent victims. The PG-13 rating on The Meg means that more ticket-buyers will be able to come and see all of the fun that director Jon Turteltaub packed into his feature, but news of an unrated cut has been swirling lately. So when we asked The Meg director if we might ever see that version, he confirmed:

Yes. Mine would have a lot gorier, but funnier, deaths for people. It's just awesome. Killing people in movies is a lot of fun.

Jon Turteltaub first brought up the idea of an R-rated cut of The Meg in an earlier interview, and elaborated that while it's easy to shoot gory deaths in the moment, finishing them up with proper effects and CGI for a movie that requires a gigantic shark to devour helpless beachgoers takes money and time. What we didn't know, however, until Turteltaub opened up to CinemaBlend was that he'd aim to make these gorier deaths a bit more comical. Which feeds into the notion that The Meg leans a little closer to Snakes on a Plane or Sharknado than it does to slow-burning terrors like Jaws.

Then again, when you cast Jason Statham in your lead, and you promise that he's likely going to punch a shark in the face, you are going for laughs. That much is confirmed by the snarky trailer, set beautifully to Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea." That set the tone for this delicious comedy... one that could be expanded in a longer, gorier, and funnier cut.

So, will we ever see this longer, gorier and funnier cut of the movie that's heading to theaters? A few days ago, I might have said no. Warner Bros. wants more audience members -- teenage audience members -- to check out the version hitting theaters on Friday! But now, with the support of the director, I'm beginning to think that a "Bloodier Cut" will be made available at some point later, on DVD or Blu-ray. Or maybe even in theaters, on a re-release, depending on how The Meg does. Here's Jon Turteltaub:

The Meg opens in theaters on Friday, Aug. 10. We're hearing that it's a ton of fun, a late-summer guilty pleasure that scratches all of the necessary itches for a killer shark comedy. Will it have more of a bite on home video? We'll know soon enough.
