Ryan Reynolds Addresses That Martha Joke In Deadpool 2

SPOILER WARNING: Mild spoilers for a joke in Deadpool 2 in case you haven't seen the movie yet.

Part of the charm of the Deadpool franchise is that it can make fun of all the other superhero movies that are out there. No one is safe from the criticism of Deadpool, who in his latest film makes fun of the MCU, the DCEU, and --especially -- the X-Men. With regards to the DCEU, Deadpool 2 makes two notable jokes at the cinematic universe's expense, one of which is about the infamous Martha moment from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Some DC fans have not been a fan of people making fun of this moment in the past and Ryan Reynolds recently addressed why they made the joke.

The 'Martha' gag, it's a perfectly Deadpool moment. I think Deadpool is willing to break a few eggs to make that omelet.

At the beginning of Deadpool 2, Deadpool arrives late for a date with Vanessa and comes up with a series of excuses for why he was late. One of the excuses that he gives is that he was busy "fighting a caped badass, only to discover that his mom was named Martha too." This is a pretty clear reference to Batman V Superman, which featured a moment in which Batman decides not to kill Superman after learning that both their mothers are named Martha. It's an alright joke, but some DC fans have been vocal in the past about disliking (to put it generously) when people make fun of the Martha moment.

While there doesn't seem to be any current controversy around the Martha joke in Deadpool 2, Ryan Reynolds was asked if he was ready to "face the wrath of DC fans" on The Empire Film Podcast due to the strong reaction some fans had to criticism of Batman V Superman at the time of release. In the host of the podcasts experience, DC fans don't like Martha jokes. So, has time softened the online Martha debate? As far as Reynolds is concerned, the joke is pretty on brand for Deadpool, so it's not like they went out of their way to poke fun at this one movie. Plus, Deadpool 2 pokes fun at a lot of other superhero movies, so the movie isn't exclusively piling on to DC movies.

The Deadpool 2 joke probably isn't worth getting worked up over and I would say enough time has passed that controversy around the Martha of it all has cooled down significantly since the movie was released.

Would Natalie Portman Appear In Another Marvel Movie? Here's What She Says

The Thor franchise is feeling better than ever before thanks to Thor: Ragnarok, a movie that moves the franchise in a new (and funnier) direction. While the movie is near universally loved, the Thor series has not always been looked at so favorably and it may be telling that it abandons many of the side characters from the previous two movies. One of these characters was Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. Portman had something of a falling out with Marvel Studios after Thor: The Dark World and while that experience was not so great for her, she's still open to coming back to the MCU down the road.

I'm completely open to everything, but I have no news about that.

Short but sweet! In an interview with ScreenRant, Natalie Portman was asked if she'd be open to reprising her role as Jane Foster in a Marvel movie in the future. Portman briefly answered that, yes, she's open to anything, but she has not gotten any calls about coming back.

Natalie Portman was reportedly not happy with the production of Thor: The Dark World. She was a big supporter of Patty Jenkins as director of the sequel, and she was apparently not happy when creative differences led to Jenkins leaving the project (she bounced back pretty well, I'd say) and Marvel hiring Alan Taylor instead. In addition, Jane Foster's role in The Dark World felt out of place among the high-fantasy concepts of the film and she never quite gelled with the Asgard setting. Even though she had no place in the story of Thor: Ragnarok, she was still written out of the movie through an arguably unceremonious throwaway line.

I think the bigger question here though is not will Jane Foster return, but do we want her to? She has never been a particularly big character and I can't say that her presence has been entirely missed in all this time. The main argument to bring her back is that Jane Foster becomes Thor in the comics, and while that is a really awesome storyline with lots of meat for an actress like Natalie Portman, I think that ship may have already sailed. It doesn't feel like Portman and Marvel are at the point where the studio would just make her the lead of her own franchise. Plus, with Tessa Thompson's fan-favorite Valkyrie now a part of the franchise, Marvel has perhaps a better option for a female franchise lead.

Maybe Jane Foster doesn't get to show up in Avengers: Infinity War, a movie almost everyone else gets to be in, but Natalie Portman will be starring in Annihilation, a really heavily buzzed sci-fi movie, opening in theaters on February 23, 2018.




Although Natalie Portman did say she was done with the Thor franchise, she left a door open for Jane Foster to pop up again in an Avengers movie or some other Marvel project.

Dwayne Johnson is involved in so many films that it's impossible for him not to have a backlog waiting in the wings. However, one that has been talked about for a long time, with little movement, has been a Doc Savage movie. The project is set to be written by Shane Black and star The Rock in the title role as the pulp-era adventurer, but things have been very quiet on that front for a long time. Now, Dwayne Johnson reveals the reason for the delay is in regards to business issues around the rights to the character. According to Johnson...

That project had a few issues, not creative issues but more so business affairs issues --- where the project once was, who had rights to it, where we were trying to move it to. There was a lot of that, which we're still kind of working through.

Dwayne Johnson has Rampage hitting theaters this weekend, another pair of films, Skyscraper and Fighting with my Family set for later this year, and numerous other projects from Disney's Jungle Cruise to a Fast and Furious spinoff to DC's Black Adam down the line. It wasn't clear where Doc Savage was going to fit in all that but based on what Johnson tells Collider, it likely won't be fitting in anywhere, as the project isn't ready to move forward until these rights issues are sorted out. These are the sorts of issues that can often take quite some time to clear up, so there's no telling when Doc Savage could be ready to go.

While The Rock's initial comment makes it sound like the Doc Savage issues are being actively worked through, the next thing he says is a bit more ominous, making it sound like it's possible these rights issues could hold the movie up indefinitely.

At the end of the day, Shane's such a spectacular writer or director, but whether it's that project or something else, we've made a pact that we're going to work together at some point in our careers.

If Dwayne Johnson is using the word or it could mean that he and Shane Black could conceivably work on some other movie together instead of Doc Savage, likely because the pair could decide the business issues are not going to reach the conclusion they want, and they leave the project behind. That would be really unfortunate as there may not be a better actor alive today to play the role than Johnson. Doc Savage is the perfect hero who has been physically and mentally trained since birth to be the best at everything, and if that isn't how Dwayne Johnson came to be, I'm not sure how he really exists.




While Dwayne Johnson has been attached to star in a Doc Savage adaptation since 2016, with Shane Black set to direct from a script he's co-writing with his The Nice Guys co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, don't expect this to go before cameras anytime soon.
