Brie Larson Won An MTV Award For Captain Marvels Fights, And Brought Her Stunt Doubles To Accept

MTV held its annual Movie and TV Awards last night. The awards are voted on by fans which means that we tend to see more popular films take home the prizes. The fact that awards are given for "Best Kiss" and "Best Fight" certainly doesn't hurt either.

This year's Best Fight award was given to to the battle between Carol Danvers and Minn-Erva from Captain Marvel. Brie Larson was there to accept the award, but in a classy move, she didn't accept the award alone. The actress brought her trainers and Captain Marvel stunt doubles, Joanna Bennett and Renae Moneymaker with her. Then, she stood aside, and let each of them say a few words. Check out the speech below.

This is an incredibly classy move from Brie Larson. While it's great to see Brie Larson win an award for the fight scene, the actress knows that she didn't do it alone and she wants to be sure the appropriate people get recognized. These two women helped train her for the fight in question, and in at least some of the shots of that fight scene, it's probably one of them, and not Larson, anyway.

As Joanna Bennett says here, it's rare that stunt people get recognized for the work that they do, all the more reason that it was a wonderful gesture for Larson to make sure that the MTV audience saw all the people behind the award winning fight. Hopefully, they can get a couple more of those popcorn bucket statues so that both of these women can go home with an award as well. It was clearly a team effort between the three to make Captain Marvel work.

The most prominent award given for stunt performance is probably the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble award given out by the Screen Actors Guild. That award has been given out since 2007. None of the other major movie awards have a specific award for stunt work.

There have been numerous calls for the Academy Awards to recognize stunt work in some way. As of yet, that hasn't happened. Hopefully more moves like the one Brie Larson made here will help that cause. Stuntpeople should absolutely receive an Oscar for their work. They are skilled as anybody else on either side of the camera in what they do, and cinema simply wouldn't be able to function, especially in the modern blockbuster landscape, without them.

There's a good chance we'll be seeing these three working together again. While we don't know what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has planned for Captain Marvel, considering the movie made $1 billion, a sequel seems all but guaranteed. When it happens we can be fairly sure that these three will work together once again to bring Captain Marvel back to life.

Mark Hamill Loves All The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Speculation

Hey, remember when we were all like "Who is 'The Last Jedi?'" Good times. Star Wars fans immediately returned to speculation mode after the title of Star Wars: Episode IX was revealed to be The Rise of Skywalker.

Which Skywalkers are rising? Who is a Skywalker?

You know who loves this? Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. No stranger to trolling, Hamill must be cackling as hard as Emperor Palpatine at all the furious scrambling for answers. He seems relieved to finally be able to address the "cool title" J.J. Abrams went with for the end of the Skywalker Saga. He also helpfully added names to the Skywalker speculation list, as if he doesn't already know exactly what the script reveals:

As usual, Star Wars fans responded with some great comments and suggestions. We all have our favorite and least favorite characters and storylines, whether they carried over from the original trilogy, the prequels, or the sequels. I'm fond of this debate over Kylo/Ben Solo (Adam Driver):

Yes to slow digestion for a thousand years. I'm not sure Ben would rise from the dark just to ask Rey out -- and Daisy Ridley did tell fans The Rise of Skywalker wouldn't have another shirtless Kylo/Rey ForceTime scene. But as the son of Leia, Ben Solo does have Skywalker blood. He, Luke and Leia are the known Skywalkers at this point. The Force Awakens hinted to Rey also possibly being a Skywalker, but The Last Jedi seemed to shut that down. Seemed to, anyway. Who knows what's ahead now.

Mark Hamill openly invited speculation on his own Twitter thread, so fans replied with their own predictions. Since both Luke and apparently Palpatine are returning, despite both appearing to have died in past Saga movies, some fans are hoping for major Force ghost action ahead.

Mark Hamill was ultimately re-seduced by The Dark Side of The Force and trolled fans with this Joker/Star Wars crossover, pretending he was the cackle at the end of the trailer instead of Palpatine:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the culmination of all three trilogies, so fans are looking back to the prequels and original trilogy for hints on what characters might be involved. Director J.J. Abrams said the title of this film "had a very weird responsibility" since it had to mark the end of nine movies.

Anything goes at this point, just one day after the first teaser was revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2019. And I do mean teaser. We should expect a full official trailer to arrive later in the year. So feel free to share your own theories and prepare to revise them in the months ahead before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20. After that, there will be some kind of hiatus before the next Star Wars films rise.

What The Duke Nukem Movie Is Trying To Learn From Deadpools Success

With the recent release of Tomb Raider, the video game movie genre has finally taken a big step forward. With any luck, the genre will continue to grow with the eventual debut of the upcoming Duke Nukem movie. The adaptation of the fan-favorite shooter series has excited many nostalgic gamers hoping to see Duke's wiseass charm on the silver screen, and CinemaBlend recently had the chance to ask producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller what audiences can expect from the movie during an interview for their new film, A Quiet Place. Addressing their approach to Duke Nukem, Form explained that they learned a lot from Tim Miller's Deadpool regarding how to handle tone, saying:

We are working on Duke Nukem right now. It's going to be about tone. That's about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don't get the tone right then we're not going to make the movie.

Adapting intellectual property into a movie required filmmakers and producers to remember that a one-size-fits-all approach won't work. In the case of Deadpool, that film worked because it found a tone that matched the titular character and capitalized on Ryan Reynolds' ability to play a perfect smartass. That effect has not gone unnoticed throughout the film industry, and Andrew Form seems particularly interested in making sure that Duke Nukem can learn from Deadpool and find the tone to honor the source material and resonate with audiences. Moreover, the Duke Nukem games already play to very similar themes of meta-commentary on pop culture and satire of excessive masculinity, so the Deadpool roadmap seems worth following.

Beyond that, there are some inherent challenges to the creation of a Duke Nukem movie that wasn't necessarily an issue for the Deadpool movie. Chief among these is the fact that Duke Nukem, by his very nature, is kind of a sexist jerk who demeans women and eschews most forms of political correctness. Andrew Form also addressed those characteristics during his interview with me, saying:

You know that having a misogynistic guy in today's world, how do you make that fun and lovable and at the same time he's got to be an incredible badass, so those are the things that we're struggling with and we're going to try and come out with what I hope is a really fun ride. That's the goal, is for it to be a really fun ride.

One other element of the Duke Nukem movie that has raised numerous eyebrows in recent weeks is the possibility of Blockers actor John Cena stepping into the titular role. The potential casting makes sense when we consider the muscle-bound machismo that Cena brings to the table, and Andrew Form made sure to confirm that Cena (as of right now) is definitely onboard as their Duke. Form explained:

Yeah, that's what we're working with now. He is. Yes. We don't have a script yet, so that is confirmed at this point but if he reads the script and he doesn't like the script I'm sure there's ways that he could pull out, but right now he's our guy.
