Episode IX Could Finally Answer A Big Force Awakens Question

The following story contains a rumor which, if true, would be a spoiler for Star Wars: Episode IX.

A lot of people were upset by the way Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't resolve many of the questions left hanging by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but a new rumor says Episode IX may go back and deal with one of those questions. How did Maz Kanata come by possession of the Anakin Skywalker lightsaber? The last film never addressed the question, but it appears the next film might, and if the rumor is to be believed, the answer also answers another question we have about Star Wars Episode IX. How exactly will Lando Calrissian fit into the story?

As with all rumors, grains of salt should be liberally applied, but according to this unconfirmed report, Maz Kanata will have a much larger role in Star Wars Episode IX than her cameo appearance in The Last Jedi. As part of this new larger role, Rey and Maz are actually traveling together early in the film, which includes a scene where Maz explains how she came by the lightsaber she gave to Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Apparently, Lando Calrissian returned to Cloud City at some point after Return of the Jedi and came across the weapon, apparently literally sitting in a lost and found box that had been collected by some of the city's Ugnaught inhabitants. He then turned the lightsaber over to Maz, believing she would know what to do with it.

It seems Maz might be the door that Lando walks through to re-enter the story of Star Wars. We're told in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Han and Maz are old friends, and we know Han and Lando are old friends, so it's perfectly believable that Maz and Lando are also old friends. While The Force Awakens doesn't dwell on it much, we also know that Maz Kanata is sensitive to the Force, which is likely the reason Lando would think the lightsaber would be safe in her keeping.

Of course, even if this rumor is completely true, and again, let's stress that Movieweb doesn't even mention a source, named or otherwise, it doesn't explain why Lando is seemingly important here. It would be one thing if Star Wars Episode IX decided to name drop Lando just for the referential quality, but the fact that he's name dropped here and Billy Dee Williams is reported to be reprising his role as Lando in the film, is almost certainly not a coincidence. Perhaps Lando's story of how he found the lightsaber will prove important in some way.

With filming now getting underway or, according to some reports, already underway, expect to hear a lot more rumors for Star Wars Episode IX in the months to come.

For a particular generation, there may be no movie that better encapsulates childhood than The Sandlot. Of course, when you're a kid a lot of your time is taken up wanting to do more grown-up stuff. Such was the case with the cast of The Sandlot, who revealed recently during a 25th-anniversary retrospective that one of the most memorable things that happened as part of making the movie was when they all snuck into a showing of Basic Instinct together, thanks to the older brother of one of the cast members. According to Marty York who played Yeah-Yeah...

Tom Guiry's brother, Tom Guiry who plays Smalls, said, 'Hey, I'm gonna sneak you guys into a film.' And he snuck us into Basic Instinct after we were done filming.

Even if you've never actually seen Basic Instinct, there's a good chance you're familiar with it by reputation. It's a very steamy thriller best known for an interrogation scene that includes Sharon Stone proving to the entire audience that she's not wearing underwear. In addition to that, she spends a large portion of the film having sex. It's far from surprising why a bunch of 12-year-old boys would be interested in seeing the film, even if the actual plot about the hunt for a serial killer probably didn't interest them much.

One has to wonder just how it easy it was to sneak a half dozen kids who were obviously not 17 into a movie all at once. Perhaps the local theater didn't really worry about film ratings all that much back in the early 1990s.

Even without the excessive sex and nudity, the film is quite violent and very rated-R. It would be years before these kids would be allowed to see such a film in a theater normally. For that reason, it's not surprising that even 25 years later the cast remembers getting snuck into the movie by the older brother of one of their co-stars. Victor DiMattia, who played Timmy, pointed out to ESPN that, since they were all kids, this was a pretty significant experience for them.

It was a big moment for a 12-year-old.

The Sandlot is about a group of friends who go through a significant part of their adolescence together. It seems that the filming of the movie was something of a case of life imitating art. Getting up to no good is something that all kids do from time to time, and sneaking into an R-rated movie certainly qualifies. The fact that they weren't supposed to be there may have had as much, if not more, to do with why this was a memorable experience than the movie itself.

Todd Phillips Confirms His Joker Movie Will Be Rated R

The upcoming Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix looks to be as dark and disturbing as anything we've ever seen containing a character out of DC Comics. From all outward appearances, it seemed quite likely the new movie was going to be for adult audiences only. However, the official rating from the MPAA has yet to be released, so we didn't know for certain until now. Joker director Todd Philips has now confirmed that the film will receive an R-rating.

In response to fans asking the director to confirm the rating on Instagram, Philips said...

It will be Rated R. Ive been asked this a lot. Just assumed people knew. Sorry.

On the one hand, it's somewhat understandable why Todd Philips would assume people knew that Joker would be rated-R. From the time the movie was first announced it was being portrayed as something unlike most comic book movies that we are familiar with. While we've had our share of "dark and gritty" superheroes, this was looking like it was going to be something else entirely.

From the point that we saw the first trailer, it was clear that Joker wasn't just going to be dark, it was going to be somewhat twisted, fitting considering the character.

Having said that, you can never be quite sure how a studio is going to handle any given movie. Ever since Deadpool proved that an R-rated comic book movie still works, fans have wanted to see some of the more mature or violent characters handled in that way, but it hasn't always happened.

Many fans were expecting to see an R-rated Venom movie, and for a time it seemed like such a thing was a possibility, but in the end, we got the more audience friendly PG-13 rating. Until we knew for sure, there was always the possibility that something similar could happen with Joker.

In the case of Venom, the right choice was probably made, at least from a box office perspective, because that film did massive business. There's no indication that there anything was cut from the movie or that the filmmakers had their hands tied to get the PG-13 rating.

Since Todd Philips just sort of assumed everybody knew his movie was rated-R, then it's clearly the case that was always the plan. There was always an expectation that the material would be too much for anything else. If nothing else, this is good news because it means that the version of the movie that we're getting is the one Philips wanted to create. As long as that happens, the rating is less important.

Joker isn't set to hit screens until October, so it may still be a while before we get the official word from the MPAA on the rating,. It will likely give us some additional details that explain why the film was given the rating it was. The trailer doesn't make the movie look particularly bloody or violent, more disturbing, though it's possible the trailer is leaving those details out.
