Rian Johnson Says Conflicts With Mark Hamill About Luke Skywalker Were Not That Bad

It's no secret that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has spurred a wide variety of opinions. The film took some big swings, and some of the decisions made didn't initially sit well with certain people, not the least of which included none other than Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill. Having said that, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson opened up in a recent interview and explained that his conflicts with Hamill were more collaborative than detrimental to the project. Per Johnson:

It was definitely a thread throughout the whole [making of the film] and it was a conversation with Mark throughout the whole thing. We talked about it, we thought through it, we butted heads about it... we did all the stuff that you always do with an actor with a part --- even moreso because it's Mark Hamill and it's about Luke Skywalker, and because it was such a big decision --- the way that his character went in the movie. I feel like it maybe comes across as if that's what our relationship was the whole time, but it wasn't.

If you have read about Mark Hamill's thoughts and feelings towards Star Wars: The Last Jedi, then you likely already know what Rian Johnson is referring to here. In fact, upon initially reading the script for the film, Hamill even admitted that he was "appalled" by Episode VIII's direction. However, Johnson seems to assert that this head-butting was no different than the conflict experienced on any other film set, and the conflict didn't define their working relationship. Johnson and Hamill simply both understood the weight of bringing this character back for one more adventure.

In Rian Johnson's eyes, this struggle ultimately served to help make the film better. The director continued in his interview with The Los Angeles Times and explained how he hopes that the release of The Director and The Jedi documentary highlights those qualities. Johnson said:

Even when we were having conflict about it, it was constructive in terms of me having to articulate why I made the choices I made. I do think that comes across in the doc. It's an aspect of the storyline of the making of this movie.

Of course, now audiences will have to wait and see what Rian Johnson can do with a pure, blank canvas to construct his narrative. The Looper director is currently in the process of developing his own Star Wars trilogy that will take the story away from the legacy of the Skywalker family, meaning he will have total freedom to create in this new corner of the galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently available on Digital HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Super Troopers 2 Director Jay Chandrasekhars Take On The Bad Reviews

A critically panned film that debuted at #9 at the box office upon its release, Super Troopers eventually found its audience, becoming a cult classic with a fanbase passionate enough to crowdfund a sequel. Last month, 17 years after the debut of its predecessor, Super Troopers 2 finally hit theaters. Although some reviews, including our own, found that there is fun to be had with the sequel, especially for people who like the original, Super Troopers 2 was met with generally negative reviews overall. For director Jay Chandrasekhar, who went through a hellish process to get Super Troopers 2 made, the bad reviews just don't make sense to him, as he explained:

Well, I gotta tell ya, man. The first Super Troopers had a 35% [critical] rating and a 90% audience rating. And I thought on this movie that the critics would say, 'Well, we got that one wrong. Here's our chance to make up for it.' But that didn't happen. What can you do? I think people get tired of movies when they see too many. I don't know what to say [laughs]. I just don't know what to say. We worked very hard on that movie. We wrote 37 drafts of that thing. It's a good movie.

Jay Chandrasekhar's hope here seemed to be that critics who were perhaps on the wrong side of history with the original film, given its eventual cult classic status, would view the sequel more favorably and with an open mind. Clearly that did not happen, as Super Troopers 2 currently sits at 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. That's about on par with the first one, although the audience score (a less scientific metric), for what it's worth, is lower than the original, resting at 72%. That is still favorable, meaning that audiences who sought it out generally liked it, even if for some it didn't live up to the original and over a decade of anticipation.

It is readily apparent how much hard work Jay Chandrasekhar and the Broken Lizard crew put into this movie to deliver something that they are proud of for the fans. So it has to be difficult to have such a labor of love receive generally bad reviews. I do find it somewhat sad that you can tell that Jay Chandrasekhar is disappointed that the critics didn't embrace the film. Speaking with Business Insider, Jay Chandrasekhar sounded somewhat dumbfounded by the bad reviews, but resigned to them, saying:

I cannot tell you what happened. Except that some of them just don't like that movie. They also don't like that kind of movie, you know? It's that kind of movie that seems to bug them. And all us comedy filmmakers, we have to suffer the brunt of that for some reason. But that's the way it goes.

It is clear that the critics didn't like the movie, but as Jay Chandrasekhar notes, Super Troopers 2 isn't exactly the kind of movie that critics normally take to. Vulgar, stupid humor can occasionally win over critics, but this doesn't frequently happen. I generally don't like when filmmakers say that a movie wasn't made for the critics, since it sounds like an excuse, but this type of movie really isn't critic friendly and that's ok. The real test for Super Troopers 2 was always going to be what the fans thought. I'm not sure it could be a positively reviewed movie and still be Super Troopers.

It is hard to say if negative reviews diminished the box office at all for Super Troopers 2. I imagine that most people who liked the first film and wanted to see the second film were going to regardless of the reviews. Super Troopers 2 beat expectations in its opening weekend, earning $15.18 million and currently sitting at a total domestic haul of $27.4 million. It's hardly a king's ransom, but given the film's $13.5 million budget, that's not an insignificant sum. If you liked the original, Super Troopers 2 is worth checking out, as it honors its predecessor, but it is definitely not for everyone.

Super Troopers 2 is currently in theaters. Maybe it too will build its audience over time. Should a third film come to pass, there will be another chance for positive reviews, but I wouldn't count on it.

Filming The Mission: Impossible - Fallout HALO Jump Was More Insane Than You Think

A lot of the discussion when Mission: Impossible - Fallout hit theaters was about Tom Cruise skydiving stunts, but it turns out the jump was an even bigger stunt then we were led to believe. The high altitude, low open jump was already a major event simply because Tom Cruise, an actor, was the one doing it, but a behind-the-scenes feature on the jump on the new Blu-ray for Mission: Impossible - Fallout reveals that the jump seen on screen is actually three jumps, and they required the invention of entirely new equipment just to make it work.

It turns out that it actually took over 100 skydiving jumps to get the final scene that we get in the movie. This is because Tom Cruise first had to qualify at a number of different altitudes. Then, numerous jumps were done at lower altitudes as part of the rehearsal process, as everybody, Tom Cruise, the cameraman, the safety personnel that jumped with him, and the stunt diver that handled Henry Cavill's part of the scene, all learned what they were going to need to do in order to make the actual HALO jump work on film.

Where things really start to get interesting, however, is where the production has to figure out how to both produce a safe high altitude jump and also shoot a scene that's going to work for a blockbuster action movie. Because of the altitude, Tom Cruise needed to be breathing from an oxygen tank, which meant the helmet that he wore wasn't there simply for show as it was actually providing his air. However, this helmet had some special features that needed to be there for filming, though those features provided their own problems, according to director Christopher McQuarrie...

We had to develop a special helmet. It's a nighttime sequence which means we have to find a way to light Tom's face. Any sort of spark from the lights, it's going to set Tom on fire. We essentially designed what is both a prop and a life-saving device.

According to Tom Cruise, the helmet had to be certified by the Royal Air Force in order to be sure it would function properly under the extreme conditions, so while it was partially designed as a movie prop, as McQuarrie states, it is a functional life-saving device as well.

Before Mission: Impossible hit theaters, it was revealed how precise the filming of the sequence had to be. Since it's a nighttime scene, the light has to be just right. Since it needed to be filmed as close to sundown as possible, only one chance per day existed to get the shot they needed, since the sun would be long gone before such an undertaking could be reset.

What made this all the more complicated was that in order to film the jump the way that Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise wanted to, they'd actually have to make the jump three times. According to McQuarrie...

Part one, is Tom jumping out of the aircraft and falling into a closeup. We're talking about Tom jumping out of a plane that's traveling at 165 milers an hour. He's falling at 200 miles an hour. Everything that Tom is doing, a camera operator is doing backwards. The biggest challenge of part one was focus. It's an incredibly complicated shot.

Tom Cruise had to get down to a distance of three feet from the cameraman, which was quite difficult in itself falling through the sky, but then the camera operator has to keep Cruise's entire fall in focus properly or none of it actually mattered. On the plus side, they had a camera operator who is used to skydiving with a camera, though, like Tom Cruise, he had never done anything quite like this before.

The second jump in the sequence is the portion where Henry Cavil's character Walker loses consciousness and Ethan Hunt has to track him down in the sky. The major risk here, which is probably obvious, is that of a collision between the two. If the performers had hit their heads they could damage their helmets and/or actually lose consciousness. When Hunt and Walker connect, the second jump is over.

The third jump sequence opens with Ethan Hunt giving oxygen to Walker. This meant the film crew had to create an oxygen tank that could be removed and transferred from one person to another since that's not generally how such things are designed. In order to allow the tank to connect to the other skydiver while falling at 200 miles per hour, the crew had to use incredibly powerful magnets. Actually connecting the tank was dangerous as getting a finger caught between the magnets could break your finger.

This last jump was actually the final shot of the entire movie, the featurette actually shows Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie and many other members of the crew together watching the playback in order to see whether or not they actually got the shot that they needed to call it a wrap.

It's more than a little remarkable just how much work went into this one sequence that takes up barely two minutes of screen time. From a minimum of three high altitude jumps (it's unclear just how many were actually required to get the three takes they needed) to the designing of never before used, completely functional, skydiving equipment, oh, and I forgot to mention the massive wind tunnel the production built at the beginning of all this just for rehearsal purposes, it's absolutely insane that this was all done simply so this sequence could be done practically rather than via the use of digital effects.

Of course, practical stunts is what Tom Cruise, and the Mission: Impossible franchise, are all about. Whether it's climbing sheer buildings or jumping out of airplanes at 25,000 feet, Tom Cruise is going to do it if it means creating a more realistic movie experience. How Tom Cruise will top this in the next Mission: Impossible movie, that we have to assume is coming, is anybody's guess.

When The DCEUs Birds Of Prey Movie May Start Filming

The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. Still very much in its infancy, the shared universe attempted to do what Marvel did with just a few short movies, to less than ideal results. As such, the future of the DCEU is largely in the air, with only Shazam! and Aquaman having concrete production and release dates. DC has become associated with announcing new and exciting projects, although it's unclear if the films will actually come to fruition. One of these recently announced projects is the Birds of Prey movie, and now we may have an idea when the female-centric team up movie will begin filming.

Rumors are always swirling around superhero projects, and the latest report indicates that DC's Birds of Prey movie is aiming to start filming in January of 2019. Considering how early the film is in its development, this makes a great deal of sense. A proper script can be worked on, before offers start going out to cast members. Birds of Prey will bring a bunch of new characters into the DCEU, so the pressure is on to nail down a great cast.

News of Birds of Prey's reported January start date, which comes to us from Heroic Hollywood, may be a bit surprising for the hardcore DC fans out there. While the fandom is eager for more exciting DC movies to hit theaters, it's been unclear how real Birds of Prey actually is. Since DC has revealed and backtracked so many big announcements, the fandom is a bit jaded. Plus, we have no idea which characters will be included, or what actors are going to be cast as the iconic characters. But if this report is to be believed, then we may be getting some answers sooner rather than later.

Just a few months ago it was announced that director Cathy Yan would be helming the Birds of Prey movie. This new team up film likely will bring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn back to the DCEU, after being one of the only redeeming factors of Suicide Squad. Robbie herself has expressed interest in pairing Harley with more female characters, with Birds of Prey seeming like the perfect choice to do so.

Aside from Harley, it's been strongly hinted that Birds of Prey will also focus on Batgirl. Now the question is: which one?
