Lynda Carters Blunt Thoughts About Wonder Woman Getting No Oscar Nominations

Wonder Woman was one of the most popular movies of last year, so much so that many thought it might be considered for Academy Awards. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The movie was left out entirely, which doesn't make TV's Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, very happy. She thinks the film should have been nominated in at least a couple categories, including writing and visual effects. According to Carter...

I was really happy to see they showed a clip of the film during the Oscars, even though they didn't nominate it for anything. Anything. It should have been nominated. They were left out of special effects, writing, everything. Patty did an amazing job. The essence of the character is not an easy one to find the right balance of. Patty got it.

A lot of people were hoping for some pretty significant Oscar nominations for Wonder Woman. There were many who thought a Best Director nomination for Patty Jenkins wouldn't be unwarranted and while that was certainly a long shot, there's little argument that Wonder Woman should have been in the conversation for some of the technical awards. Lynda Carter tells The Daily Beast that, beyond simply being considered, she feels Wonder Woman should have been good enough for a nomination in at least some categories.

The visual effects Academy Award went to Blade Runner 2049, which is difficult to argue with. One superhero movie was nominated for the award, but it was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rather than Wonder Woman.

Lynda Carter also specifically mentions writing as one area where the film could have seen a nomination. The story of Wonder Woman was absolutely better than most other comic book adaptations, though it becomes a bit more formulaic towards the end. Again, a comic book movie did see a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category this year, but it was for Logan rather than Wonder Woman.

The good news for fans who would like to see Wonder Woman get recognized is that the film will get another chance, so to speak. The sequel is already planned for a 2019 release, and it will be out near the end of the year, which means the movie will be fresher in the minds of Academy voters. If Wonder Woman 2 can follow-up on its areas of success, and polish up the places where it can improve, perhaps the sequel will get recognized in ways the original was not. Until then, Wonder Woman will be forced to make due with its paltry $800 million box office and the fact that it has inspired countless women and girls around the world.

Back in late July, Star Wars: Episode IX delivered an announcement revealing what appeared to be the full cast for the blockbuster - featuring both expected names, and a few new ones. Since then, however, the project has continued to add actors to its roster, and today we have word that yet another talented performer has come on-board. According to a new report, Doctor Who star Matt Smith is now set to play a part in the new J.J. Abrams-directed chapter of the legendary sci-fi saga.

Variety is reporting the news of the casting, but sadly doesn't seem to have much info about his character - including whether or not he will be on the side of the heroes or the villains. This really isn't too surprising, however, given the level of secrecy that surrounds the project. Matt Smith is one of a few new names that are joining the Star Wars franchise for the trilogy-capper, as it's been previously said that Star Wars: Episode IX will include Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, and Naomi Ackie. Those set to reprise their roles from previous installments include include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd, as well as Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. The movie will also be repurposing footage of Carrie Fisher from Star Wars: The Force Awakens will also be repurposed so that Princess/General Leia Organa will have a role to play.

As mentioned above, Matt Smith is definitely no stranger to the science-fiction genre, as he was the actor picked to succeed David Tennant as The Doctor on the BBC's long-running series Doctor Who. He played the part from 2010 to 2014 - when he was replaced by Peter Capaldi - but that didn't bring his work with narrative timey-wimey stuff to an end. He also had a key supporting role in Alan Taylor's Terminator Genisys, playing essentially the manifestation of Skynet, but that didn't go super well.

Star Wars: Episode IX, which does not yet have an official title, is currently in production, and as of right now we really don't know what it will be about. At the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Resistance was barely surviving - rescued by Rey with her blossoming Jedi powers - and Kylo Ren had replaced Supreme Leader Snoke as the leader of the First Order. It's even unclear right now exactly where the story will pick up, as Rian Johnson's film notably began right where Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off. Sadly, that information probably won't be known for at least a few more months. After having its release date pushed back a few times, and having to reshoot the third act of the movie, Dark Phoenix finally arrived in theaters this weekend. The film had behind-the-scenes drama and a piece of the problem was in the film's original ending. The ending had to be reshot and it sounds like it was because it was too similar to two other Marvel releases, Captain America: Civil War and Captain Marvel.

The cast of Dark Phoenix has already shed some light on the film's original ending and that it had to be reshot because it was too similar to another superhero movie. Online detectives were quick to deduce that it had to be Captain Marvel, which also features a cosmically powered female lead learning to cope with massive powers. However, director Simon Kinberg has revealed that elements of Civil War were also in the equation.

My original ending didnt have the entire X-Family together the way they are in the film now. More than Captain Marvel, you could see a lot of Civil War in that ending. Usually, these big, huge action movies have the climactic moment in the third act. I loved the way that Civil War had its big action set piece where everyones facing off more towards the end of the second act rather than in the third so that after that huge battle, youre left with Winter Soldier, Captain America, and Iron Man.

As Simon Kinberg points out, the original ending of Dark Phoenix was going to be much more intimate and include only a small handful of characters. It also tore the X-Men apart over an ideological difference -- just like in Civil War with the Avengers.

That being said, the miscalculation here is that Civil War was built up over the course of several films with characters we knew and understood. Dark Phoenix is centered around Jean Grey, who was only in one other movie as a supporting character. We need to understand how these new X-Men relate to each other to have an ending as impactful as Civil War.

However, I don't think that could have been the reason the film was reshot. Civil War came out in May 2016 and Dark Phoenix didn't start filming until June 2017. Even if he did have a draft of the script complete when Civil War came out, Simon Kinberg had over a year for rewrites. On the other hand, maybe he didn't rewrite the ending, but it didn't score well with test audiences.

Additionally, this intimate ending was also similar to Captain Marvel, Simon Kinberg goes on to say in the same interview with io9.

Its this telescoped down view of their raw emotions, and I loved how intimate that was. Thats what I was going for with Dark Phoenixs ending even though it then might have looked like Captain Marvel for about two minutes.

Simon Kinberg elaborates that when Jean releases her powers in one scene, it was visually similar to Captain Marvel, so they had to tone it down in reshoots. He also points out that those reshoots took place long before the public had even seen Captain Marvel.

Sometimes it's all about who does it first. You can decide for yourself if Dark Phoenix made the right changes if you see the film. Critics have not been kind, but the X-Men film earned a slightly higher Audience Score and a B- CinemaScore from polled moviegoers. The blockbuster is out in theaters right now.
