You Need To See Kong: Skull Island To Fully Appreciate Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

You Need To See Kong: Skull Island To Fully Appreciate Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Warning: SPOILERS for Godzilla: King of the Monsters are ahead!

In both real life and within the MonsterVerse, five years passed between the events of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, with the latter showing the Titans wreaking even more havoc across the world. But we the audience didnt go five years without getting another look into the MonsterVerse, as Kong: Skull Island came out in 2017 and showed Monarchs first contact with King Kong in 1973.

Sometimes its clear when two movies are part of the same franchise, other times not so much. Not everyone who went to see Godzilla: King of the Monsters this past weekend necessarily knew that it exists in the same continuity as Kong: Skull Island, and to be fair, you dont need to have seen that movie to follow King of the Monsters main beats.

However, if you have seen Kong: Skull Island, then Godzilla: King of the Monsters because a more enjoyable experience, and weve provided the reasons why below.

Kong And Skull Island Are Referenced Several Times Throughout King Of The MonstersTo anyone reading this who hasnt seen Godzilla: King of the Monsters, its my duty to inform you that King Kong does not appear in the movie. Well, not in the flesh anyway. However, King of the Monsters does make sure that audiences know that King Kong exists in this world. Hes mentioned in a few sentences alongside other Titans and footage of him from Kong: Skull Island is shown on screen a few times.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters takes place 46 years after Kong: Skull Island, and while the general public knows now that the Titans exist, presumably they dont know about Kong, as Skull Island isnt the easiest place to reach. Monarch, on the other hand, has been keeping tabs on the giant gorilla in the decades since that fateful first encounter, as Skull Island is one of the many locations where the scientific organization has outposts set up.

It was probably for the best that King Kong didnt show up in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as there were more than enough Titans to keep us entertained. That said, Kong is getting primed to make his big comeback, but well discuss that more in a bit.

Theres A Fun Kong: Skull Island Cameo In King Of The MonstersLast summer, Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty revealed that a Kong: Skull Island character would appear in his movie. At the time, it was speculated that Charles Dances character was an older version of James Conrad, who Tom Hiddleston played in Kong: Skull Island. However, that proved not to be the case, as Dance was instead playing a former British colonel-turned-ecoterrorist named Alan Jonah.

Instead, the character Michael Dougherty was referring to was Houston Brooks, who Corey Hawkins played in Kong: Skull Island and Joe Morton played in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Houston, a geologist who graduated from Yale University, worked under Bill Randa during his first years at Monarch and was one of the few who survived the Skull Island incident. Nearly five decades later, hes still working for Monarch and was present to see Mothra emerge from her cocoon.

In addition to that cameo, Houston Brooks importance was increased in Godzilla: King of the Monsters because his Hollow Earth theory was finally proven true. After Godzilla was severely injured by the Oxygen Destroyer, it retreated to an ancient underwater city via a subterranean pocket, and the main human characters were shocked to discover that this and pockets like it actually existed. Now we know how the Titans are able to move so quickly around the world, and presumably Hollow Earth will play an important role in Godzilla vs. Kong and other future MonsterVerse entries.

Skull Island Looks Like It Will Become Even More Important In The MonsterVerseIn addition to King Kong never directly appearing in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, we also never set foot on Skull Island. For all we know, after the events that unfolded there in 1973, things have been calm on Skull Island in the decades since well, as calm as they can be when a giant gorilla and other monsters are roaming about. But evidently Skull Island is back to being a popular destination.

With King Ghidorah defeated, the Titans are back to their usual selves, and the Earth is even starting to be healed thanks to these beasts no longer being influenced by that three-headed, lightning-spewing monster. However, the credits revealed that now Skull Island has started to become unstable, and many of the New Titans have set up shop there. What the consequences of this will be is unclear, but its a good bet Kong will not be pleased about having so many new neighbors.

This is unquestionably set-up for Godzilla vs. Kong next year, because unless Kong is moved off his home turf before the events of that movie, well need to revisit Skull Island. For those whove seen Kong: Skull Island, it will be interesting to see if the island has changed since 1973, if at all. After all, this isnt a place known for technological advancement, so the human population could be living exactly the same way as they did nearly five decades ago. On the other hand, since Monarch has an outpost on Skull Island, maybe the organizations scientists have had a lot of face time with the natives and have provided them with help.

As I said earlier, you can go into Godzilla: King of the Monsters without having seen Kong: Skull Island and still have a good time. But if you have seen Kongs first MonsterVerse appearance, then catching those references and Easter eggs, as well as having a better understand of whats to come, make King of the Monsters a little bit of a better watch. Even beyond all that, if you havent seen Kong: Skull Island, watch it just to get an idea of the gorillas fighting style in this universe so you can better imagine what his impending fight with Godzilla will look like.

Be sure to read CinemaBlends review and To 3D guide for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for coverage on Godzilla vs. Kong and the rest of the MonsterVerse. You can also look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what movies are hitting theaters later this year.

This not only allows for Skull Island to offer some unique Kong action - bi-planes would prove no issue for this King - but ostensibly gives a in-built way for him to take on Godzilla. Although there is still a problem with this - the maths doesn't add up.

The Russo Brothers Had To Lie To Avengers: Endgame Actors For The Final Scenes

The Russo Brothers Had To Lie To Avengers: Endgame Actors For The Final Scenes

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. If you haven't seen it, look away.

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for nearly two weeks, and moviegoers haven't stopped discussing and dissecting every frame of The Russo Brothers' masterful blockbuster. The co-directors managed to do the impossible, crafting a complicated emotional story that had a a ton of connections to the greater MCU. And it's a story that included the epic death and funeral of Tony Stark.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man has been the heart and soul of the MCU since its inception, and the character went out in a truly epic way. The final moments of Avengers: Endgame showed Tony Stark's funeral, complete with some surprise cameos. But it turns out that The Russo Brothers had to lie to the talent in order to keep the secrets of Tony's fate under wraps. As Joe Russo recently explained:

90 percent of those actors showed up and they had no idea what they were doing. They thought they were there for the wedding, so we had to tell them 'Here's what's happening in the story...' because again, we're just trying to protect information. People that don't have information, it makes it easier for them to not spill the beans accidentally.

Marvel Studios is known for its secrecy, and stakes were especially high for Avengers: Endgame. The blockbuster was the cumulation of 22 movies, so The Russo Brothers went to great length to keep the film's spoilers under wraps. Even from the cast.

Tony Stark's death was an emotionally devastating aspect of Endgame, and the OG MCU hero was given the respect he deserved after wielding the new Infinity Gauntlet, and snapping past-Thanos and his forces out of existence. The Russo Brothers added the "I am Iron Man" line very late into the film's process, while the funeral scene was exactly what moviegoers needed in the moment.

Related: The Russo Brothers Suggest How Long Avengers: Endgame Spoilers Should Be Protected

The funeral was a who's who of MCU characters, but that also meant a ton of actors who had the potential to spoil Tony's fate. In their same conversation with EW Radio, Anthony Russo spoke to the excitement of filming with such a great ensemble, while also be worried about Endgame's contents being kept under wraps. As he tell it,

It was an interesting day because getting all of those actors together at one level is very celebratory and joyful but it was for a difficult reason in this scene. And also, the story point in the scene was one of the biggest secrets in the movie so we had to be very, very quiet about it.

Talk about a twist. It must have been quite the pivot in emotions going from a wedding to a funeral, but The Russo Brothers had to do everything they could to guard the secrets of their Avengers movies. And it's an effort that has paid off, as both Infinity War and Endgame delivered countless plot twists, and made an insane amount of money at the box office.

It should be interesting to see how the MCU continues on without Tony Stark. Spider-Man: Far From Home looks it'll address just that, and is set to arrive shortly.

Avengers: Endgame is out now, and Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on July 2nd. In the meantime, check out out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

See Milla Jovovich And A Giant Sword In First Monster Hunter Image

Monster Hunter isn't a video game series that's well known to the general public around here, but the first image makes the film adaptations influences quite clear. The first official look at the Monster Hunter movie is here and it includes two things you'd expect to see in any movie based on a video game, Milla Jovovich, and a big ass sword. Check it out.

The image is a pretty simple one in the grand scheme of things. It's Milla Jovovich, a veteran of the Resident Evil film franchise, and martial arts expert Tony Jaa running across the desert, or possibly a beach. The image wouldn't even be all that noteworthy except for the fact that Tony Jaa is carrying a sword as big as his head. If you had never heard of Monster Hunter before, you'd likely be able to tell that the new movie was based on a video game based on that alone.

While the Monster Hunter video game series is fairly popular in its native Japan and has no shortage of fans in the west, it's not exactly a mainstream game title. While your average filmgoer has likely heard of names like Mario, Zelda, or even the previous Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil series, unless you play games, you may not know Monster Hunter at all.

At its core, the Monster Hunter game series is exactly what it says on the tin. A game in which players take the role of a character who is a professional hunter of monsters. These monsters can be killed or trapped. The games take place in a fantasy world where humans are regularly threatened by various creatures, and the player's job is to stop the monsters from doing damage.

Most of the games in the series have little more plot than that, though the most recent game in the franchise Monster Hunter: World has a bit more going on in the story department.

The movie will reportedly take a slightly different approach the basic material, as it will see characters from our modern world fall through a portal to an alternate dimension which appears to resemble the Monster Hunter world I just described. The modern humans will then have to become monster hunters in order to prevent the creatures from traveling back through the portal and attacking Earth.

Monster Hunter is being directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who spent the last several years bringing us the aforementioned Resident Evil movies alongside his wife Milla Jovovich. Those movies also took some significant liberties with the source material but frequently brought us some entertaining action movies if nothing else.

The Monster Hunter movie is currently without a release date but as one expects the film will require some significant post-production time in order to create all the various monsters that need to be hunted, don't expect to see this one before early 2020.
