New Footage Of The Meg Has The Perfect Shark Week Reference

The shark genre has been a staple of the summer blockbuster season ever since Steven Spielberg introduced audiences to Jaws back in the 1970s. Now, Hollywood is scaling things up to bring us a shark arguably bigger than anything we've seen before. On that note, a new clip from The Meg has just dropped online, and it features a perfect Shark Week reference to get you in the mood for summer. Check out the new footage, below!

Of course, no summer monster movie would be complete without some tongue-in-cheek humor. While The Meg has a reasonably dark and high-stakes tone in several of its scenes, The Office's Rainn Wilson is there to provide some gags and keep the film lighthearted. When faced with the seemingly insurmountable task of following the titular shark through the murky ocean depths, Jack Morris (Wilson) provides them with the easy solution: just put a tracker on it. After all, that's basically Discovery's Shark Week 101.

As that clip pretty clearly lays out: The Meg focuses on a group of scientists and shark experts on a desperate mission to track down a mysterious prehistoric shark known as a Megalodon. The behemoth carnivore is much bigger than any fish they have ever encountered before, and it leaves a massive pile of bodies in its way as it makes its way to populated areas. In addition to Rainn Wilson as Jack Morris, The Meg also features The Transporter's Jason Statham, John Wick: Chapter 2's Ruby Rose, and Fear the Walking Dead's Cliff Curtis, among several others.

There's quite a bit to get excited about in the world of The Meg, as the shark genre has proven itself incredibly successful over the course of the last few years -- particularly when it comes to summer releases. The Meg debuts on the heels of the recent surprise hits like 2016's The Shallows and last year's 47 Meters Down, which seems to prove there's still an appetite for this type of film with modern moviegoers. Couple that with the fact that The Meg is bringing in a stacked cast and some solid Shark Week humor, and it seems reasonable to assume that this could very well go on to become one of the August releases to watch out for this year.

The Meg will swim its way into theaters later this year on August 10. Make sure to catch the late summer monster fest when it debuts, and keep an eye on CinemaBlend's full movie premiere guide to learn more about all of the biggest and best films set to debut in 2018! As always, if you have an opinion on this clip from The Meg, then make sure to tell us what you think.
