Mission: Impossible Director Chris McQuarrie Reportedly Turned Down Some DC Projects
It's no secret that superhero movies are everywhere nowadays. The comic book genre has proven the most profitable and popular genre in the business, with tons of filmmakers and impressive talent signing on for the chance to get involved in one of the massive shared universes. Of course, this is also a two-way street, with studios seeking out talent to work both in front and behind the camera.
Unfortunately, not everyone is down to clown-- including Mission: Impossible-- Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie. McQuarrie's name is synonymous with his iconic action franchise, and it was recently revealed that Warner Bros. actually approached the director about working on a project set within the DC Universe. Unfortunately, he reportedly turned that potential movie down.
This news comes to us from THR, which revealed that Warner Bros. attempted to bring Christopher McQuarrie into the DC fold. Unfortunately, these efforts were for naught, as he instead re-upped his contract with the Mission: Impossible franchise, and has signed on to create another two massive blockbusters. As such, he won't have the time to direct a superhero flick for the DC Universe, instead focusing on his continued collaboration with Tom Cruise.
News of Christopher McQuarrie's DC side step will no doubt cause plenty of FOMO among DC fans, who are hoping that talented directors like him will join the still growing live-action universe. The Mission: Impossible franchise has only gotten bigger and more successful with each installment, as Tom Cruise continues to push the limits of his body and the franchise's myriad stunts. As such, it looks like McQuarrie would rather craft his own place in the film industry, rather than joining the arguably already bloated superhero genre.
Of course, one has to wonder which potential projects Warner Bros. came to Christopher McQuarrie about-- before he eventually re-committed himself to Ethan Hunt's high-octane adventures. The DC Universe has a ton of exciting projects coming down the line, as the still infant shared universe once again restructures itself for success. McQuarrie seems like a great director for just about any addition in the DCEU, with the studio keeping its plans for the future largely a mystery after its current slate of movies.
Luckily, the DC Universe is on the upswing with James Wan's Aquaman. Arthur Curry's solo flick recently broke the $1 billion mark, allowing the franchise to recover from the critical and box office failure of Justice League. Shazam!, Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman 1984 are all also coming down the pipeline, with new directors being offered the chance to craft something wholly unique to the genre.
